Root Canal Treatment

Your teeth consist of a crown (the visible part) and one or more roots (these are located under the gums in the bone). A root canal, containing nerves and blood vessels, runs through each root. Sometimes inflammation occurs in this channel or there is a risk of inflammation developing. A root canal infection does not go away on its own. Once the tissue becomes inflamed it will not heal and can spread to the jawbone. If the inflammation occurs in the jaw bone, you can lose the teeth and/or molars. That is why root canal treatment is essential.

During a root canal treatment, the inflamed tissue is removed. The canal is then cleaned with small files and the dentist rinses it with a chlorine solution. Everything is then neatly closed to prevent bacteria from entering the root(s). The tooth is filled or a crown is placed. A crown is only necessary if the tooth is weakened too much to be able to fill it again. After the treatment, the tooth can no longer provide pain signals, because there is no longer a nerve in it.
